Fine Tuning
The concept of running cables in may feel alien, since the term 'running in' is usually used to explain the improvements experienced with mechanical devices after a period of use. However, though not mechanical, cables do improve with use. In our experience it takes about 72 hours of use for a cable to deliver what it is truly capable of. However it is possible to hear an immediate improvement by listening carefully to the first track on a CD then returning to it after having played a few others; there is a subtle improvement; a smoothing off of the deliveries and improvement in pace etc. There's no obvious reason for this, but it's possible that cable characteristics change as they approach ambient room temperature, or as the dielectric tends towards a 'steady residual polarisation state' (vis. dielectric absorption).
For those not in posession of one, Atlas supply a CD specifically for running in cables. It also acts as a system demagnetising 'work out' and will help to keep systems in tip top order.
The following is a letter from one of my customers on the subject of running in.
"The music now flows like a waterfall"
Dear John,
Just wanted to give you some feedback on your products.

I must admit that I was disappointed in the beginning - the cables didn't let the music through. It was as if the cable was filled with "water" and not OCC your Mono-crystal copper and the music couldn't get through. I checked the connections "more than once" I can assure you - but couldn't find any mistake in the set up. BUT after many barrels of midnight oil the cables eventually started to perform and let the music through! And you were right - they amaze. The music now flows like a waterfall in the cables and it is really a pleasure to listen to the music now. This is what I was looking for!

Always let new cables run themselves in for a period before undertaking any critical evaluation. The result can be amazing!
